Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has allocated Tk 10 crore for 10,000 flood victim families of Sylhet and Sunamganj.
Today, two concerts will be taking place in Dhaka, both of which have been organised with the intent to raise funds for the flood victims in Sylhet and Sunamganj.
A total of 24 people have died due to flood across the country in the last 24 hours till morning today (June 23, 2022).
June was already looking bad. Sadly, there was more to come.
The ongoing flood in the northwest has so far claimed at least 22 lives in Sylhet and Netrakona, with the death toll expected to go up as information from remote areas is coming to the authorities belatedly.
Bidyanondo Foundation is a non-profit organisation with a mission to help poor communities of Bangladesh. As a part of the emergency response for the flash floods in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Kurigram and Netrokona, Bidyanondo teams have been helping to distribute food and water purification tablets amongst the people of the flood affected areas. Due to flash floods and torrential rain, 13 lakh people have been stranded in the peripheries of Bangladesh, and Biyanondo is one of the names that came to immediate rescue.
The current flooding in Sylhet has caused losses of more than Tk 140 crore for the local aquaculture industry, with farmers in Sunamganj district being the worst affected, according to a preliminary estimate by the Department of Fisheries (DoF).
"I was on the ground floor. After the water entered, I came to the balcony of the first floor along with other patients. There is no electricity. Candles are being used. I don't know how to get treatment,” said 58-year-old Farooq Ahmed, who was admitted to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Urgent humanitarian aid needed in flood-hit northeast
Nearly 2.5 lakh people are marooned and two hundred schools are shut down due to the onrush of water from the upstream and heavy rainfall triggered by monsoon over the last one week in Sylhet and Moulvibazar.
Flash floods triggered by heavy rain and hailstorms have damaged Boro paddy massively in the haor areas of Sunamganj and Sylhet.
