Graft: Former shipping dept chief engineer’s bail cancelled
The High Court today cancelled a lower court order that granted bail to SM Nazmul Huq, former chief engineer and surveyor of the Department of Shipping in a bribery case.
The HC also ordered Nazmul, who was allegedly caught while taking a bribe of Tk 5 lakh for approving a ship's design on April 12 last year, to surrender to the trial court in a week in connection with the case.
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission challenging the trial court order that granted bail to Nazmul.
A Dhaka court on August 13 last year granted bail to Nazmul in the case on a Tk 50,000 bail bond, and then he was released from jail, Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told The Daily Star.
He also said the ACC filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka against Nazmul after a team of the commission arrested him while he was taking a bribe of Tk 5 lakh from one Imam Hasan of Syed Shipping Lines for approving a ship's design.
