Govt 'playing dirty politics' over Khaleda's illness
The BNP yesterday alleged that the government was “playing dirty politics” over the serious illness of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The party also said the government will have to take full responsibility if her health condition deteriorates.
Speaking at a press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir renewed their demand for ensuring better treatment of Khaleda at United Hospital.
Khaleda Zia's health condition is deteriorating gradually in jail. The entire nation is worried about her falling health condition, he said.
“There is still time to release Khaleda and facilitate her treatment at the hospital with a physician of her choice,” Fakhrul said.
The BNP leader urged the government to take steps for her release and treatment instead of doing “foul” politics over the issue.
Fakhrul also criticised the jail authorities for not allowing them and Khaleda's relatives to meet her over the last 10 days.
He accused the government of creating a smokescreen over Khaleda's illness to confuse people as part of its plan to keep her away from politics and the next general election.
The BNP chief has been kept at the Dhaka's old central jail on Nazimuddin Road since she was sentenced to five years' imprisonment in a graft case on February 8.
She fell ill from the beginning of April and a medical board with doctors of Dhaka Medical College Hospital was formed for her.
On April 7, Khaleda Zia was taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital where an X-ray and other tests were performed.
