Who will listen to the woes of trainee doctors?

The trainee doctors at BSMMU have been demanding an increase of monthly allowance from Tk 20,000 to Tk 50,000 – a demand which is justified.

"Ohio has failed the world"

Readers should be free to air their opinions/grievances in The Letter to The Editor page. However, opinion pieces on the Editorial and Point-Counterpoint pages must meet higher standards of accuracy, objectivity and analysis. Just because someone sends an article from the US or is the first to send an article on an important topic such as the results of the last US presidential elections, does not mean the piece is publication worthy. A case in point is Mr. Zaied Ali's error-ridden piece, "Ohio has failed the world," published in The Daily Star on November 7....

Cricket

This is in response to the letter of Nayeem Islam from Aga Khan School published in The Daily Star on 24 December. From his letter it appears to me that the writer is very much angry about our cricket team. I was also disappointed after some poor performance by the Tigers in recent times. But that doesn't mean that we should stop watching cricket. Nayeem Islam has also written that our players have no talent, nor have they any skills to play cricket. If that is true, then how could we become ICC Trophy champions, how could we beat Pakistan?...

Tsunami vs. cricket

Is the free media in Bangladesh being taken over by popular journalism? At least when I saw the newspaper headlines on the morning of 27th December, I had that fear....

Who needs foreign enemies?

It's a shame to see another teacher dying helplessly right in front of the great institution that took years to build itself . How many teachers and great minds need to die before we say enough is enough? The killing started with the Pakistan army butchering our creams right before they left.

Ironically, our own citizens are now being involved in doing the same without any punishment. I do not know what will wake up people and politicians to confront these criminals. If these kinds of activities are kept unchecked, the country will have to pay a bigger price in future .

Why Rab?

I concur with the letter regarding Rab by Kaushik Biswas. It really puts the government policies in absolute contrast with the modern world policies. Not only that, it is apparent that in the near future these policies will haunt Bangladesh for ignoring human rights concerns.

Scholars' records

I did not know Professor M. Yunus of Rajshahi University, but feel that any fatal attack on a progressive university teacher, like the one on Humayun Azad, is an ominous sign of the rise of evil forces that must be destroyed before they can become the overwhelming shaper of a society misfit for the 21st century....

Gavaskar's unkind comments

Just after Habibul Bashar won the toss and elected to field in the first ODI against India, there were some 'aggressive' comments floating around from the commentators' box. And surprisingly, the initiator was none other than the great Sunil Gavaskar. Mr. Gavaskar commented that it was the expected decision (for Bashar to field first), as this was the 'only way' Bangladesh could make this match last 70-80 overs. He also added that otherwise the match could well end up in about 40 overs or so as Bangladesh get bowled out inside 26 overs in Test matches....
