Former finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has passed away. He was 88.

He died at 12:56 am today (April 30, 2022) at United Hospital in Dhaka.

Muhith's personal secretary Jony Bhattacharjee confirmed the death news to The Daily Star.

His first janaza will be held at Gulshan Azad Mosque in Dhaka at 10:00 am today. The second janaza will be held at the Parliament premises at around 11:30 am.

Afterwards, his body will be taken to Shaheed Minar at around 1:00 pm for the public to pay their last respect.

Muhith will be buried in Sylhet.

Immediately after his death, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal expressed profound shock at the demise of the veteran economist and politician.

In a press release, the minister prayed for the salvation of his departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Born in 1934 in Sylhet, Muhith joined civil service in 1956 after a bright academic life.

He held important positions in the public service and was the first diplomat of the Pakistan embassy in Washington who transferred his allegiance to Bangladesh during the Liberation War.

He also played a vital role in drumming up global support for Bangladesh. In 2016, he was conferred with Swadhinata Puroskar, the highest civilian award, for his contribution to the Liberation War.

Muhith joined Awami League in 2001. He placed the national budget a record 12 times.

During his tenure as the finance minister, Bangladesh witnessed a significant increase in budget size, steady growth and inflation in control.

He was one of the driving forces behind Bangladesh taking up mega projects.

He might have had retired from public service but could not stop working towards the welfare of people.

During his last interview with The Daily Star, earlier this year, he said he was planning to start a foundation that would work to eliminate coronavirus, once and for all.
