Will do whatever needed to return normalcy to people’s lives: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the parliament that she would do whatever was needed to help people go on with their lives without suffering amid the Covid-19 outbreak.
"We are going to place the budget tomorrow. Many countries couldn't place it in these trying times. But we will face coronavirus on one hand and I'll continue to do whatever needed so that the people's normal life could go on and they would not suffer. We've also faced Cyclone Amphan recently," Hasina, also leader of the House, said.
The premier said this while participating in the discussion on the obituary motion over the demise of ruling Awami League MP Habibur Rahman Mollah from Dhaka-5 and distinguished personalities who died between the last session and the beginning of the eighth parliament.
When Opposition Jatiya Party Chief Whip Mashiur Rahman Ranga suggested to the PM to virtually join the session considering her safety amid the pandemic, Hasina said she is not afraid of death and had returned to Bangladesh to do something for the betterment of the people.
"I didn't come here to survive, rather to sacrifice my life for the people. So, there is nothing to be afraid of… in this regard," she said.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Awami League MP Begum Matia Chowdhury, Chief Whip ASM Feroz, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal MP and its President Hasanul Haq Inu also took part in the discussion.
A one-minute silence was observed and prayers were offered seeking salvation and eternal peace of the departed souls.
Later, the parliament unanimously adopted the obituary motion expressing profound grief at the demise of the sitting MP and other renowned personalities.
