The National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh responds to an editorial by The Daily Star.

The trainee doctors at BSMMU have been demanding an increase of monthly allowance from Tk 20,000 to Tk 50,000 – a demand which is justified.
What's going on in our country? Humayun Azad has been stabbed by unknown assailants!
There is no security of life for the eminent people, let alone the ordinary ones. I condemn the attack and urge the government to be tough on the elements who are a threat to peace and social harmony.
Congratulations to Ms. Rubana Huq for a wonderfully satirical but serious write up on the obstacle race in the RMG sector (DS: Feb 28). From the usual trauma of delays, today we have to face the new criteria: compliance with capital C the new catch word from the West!
However, I believe that having a clear understanding of the issues to be faced, Ms. Huq should be well qualified to take on the free for all battle scenario post 2005.
Should the battle be too strenuous, I am confident the writer of the interesting article can fall back upon writing as a career.
I wholly support Mohammad Badrul Ahsan concerning last week's Cross Talk on the Anti-Corruption Bill. Along with him I myself, and I am sure a good number of fellow citizens, would also want to send the massage that 'corruption is like charity which begins at home' to the political and bureaucratic elite of Bangladesh.
The experience of travelling over the "steel wooden bridge," led me to write in the DS on 26 December, 1999 ("Dilapidated Karnaphuli bridge deck"). Others too wrote in the leading dailies (Prothom Alo, titled "Karnaphuli Sethur Durabastha", Feb 2 and "Karnaphuli Sethur Sanskar Karoon", 21 April, 2000)....
A few days ago I started my classes at university. The first day I went to my university canteen I was appalled by the lack of ignorance of students and university authorities about smoking in public. I know that these students know about the harmful effects of smoking and still people consciously indulge in smoking. So I am not going to deliver a lecture on why or how you should quit smoking which you may claim as your `personal matter`, but when your personal choices affect us badly, there is something you should know about and care about....
Following the completion of my studies in Aerospace Engineering and work on several NASA advanced propulsion contracts, I came to Bangladesh to work as an adviser to SPARRSO on the former government's plans to launch a telecommunication satellite....
As a regular listener of BBC and VOA news, I find both the news media biased while circulating news about Palestine and Israel. To them, the killing of an Israeli soldier is much more important than the deaths of a large number of Palestinians.
In any country the police is a law-enforcing agency that ensures justice through protecting people against crime. In modern days police is the only force that we can count on for social security. In the distant past, people used to take the law in their own hands. There were clashes between clans, families and individuals. To avoid this kind of bloodshed people were looking for a neutral force to maintain peace and harmony. That was the driving force between the creation of police in the modern sense....
Bangladesh is an agriculture-dependent country. The lion's share of the resources of our country is the product or by-product of agriculture. Agriculturists play a vital role to produce better and more crops as well as HYV. So the agriculturists are the helmsmen of our nation.
On the basis of PM's proclamation, the PSC is going to issue the circular for the 25th batch of special BCS. I would request the PSC to allot at least 15% reserved seats for agriculture.
The biggest challenge, the world has ever faced is AIDS. This killer disease is spreading at an alarming rate. The world leaders have met many times to take some measures regarding AIDS. Though the summits have succeeded in giving an outline of the action plan, but they have failed to contribute to lessening the rate of its spread. Many countries have started thinking about taking other measures. As people are ignorant and not aware of its hazards, we cannot expect much from them....
