PM hopes to execute war crimes verdicts
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said the execution of war crimes trial verdicts has already stared and expressed hope to finish the process in her current tenure.
“It was our commitment to the nation to execute the verdicts of the war crimes trials. We will execute all the verdicts and rid the nation of the stigma,” said the premier.
She was addressing a rally on the 39th Jail Killing Day commemorating the assassinations of four national leaders.
The AL organised the public meeting at the Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka the afternoon.
On this day in 1975, four Liberation War heroes -- Syed Nazrul Islam, acting president of Bangladesh government in exile in 1971, Tajuddin Ahmad, prime minister of the same government, M Mansur Ali, finance minister, and AHM Quamaruzzaman, minister for home affairs, relief and rehabilitation -- were killed in captivity by some Army officers.
The premier alleged that BNP founder Ziaur Rahman buried the country’s democracy and violated human rights after the assignation of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975.
After grabbing power by force, late president Zia brought back former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Ghulam Azam to the country and rehabilitated him in politics.
“Ziaur Rahman declared himself president illegally and formed BNP in the same manner. So, as chief of an illegal party, she (Khaleda Zia) always sees everything of the incumbent government as illegal,” the premier said blasting the BNP chief for her frequent claims as an illegal government.
