5 more Rab men remanded in 7-murder case
A Narayanganj court today placed five personnel of Rapid Action Battalion-11 on an eight-day remand after they were arrested and produced before it in connection with the sensational seven murders.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Chandni Rupam granted the remand after police produced them before the court with 10-day remand prayers in the case filed by Selina Islam, wife of Narayanganj city councillor Nazrul Islam who was abducted and killed along with six others in April.
The Rab personnel are: Hamidul Haque, Hira Miah and Belal Hossain, Abu Tayab and Arif Hossain.
The court shown them arrested in the two cases – one filed by Salina and another by a colleague of another victim, Chandan Sarkar - in connection with the murders.
Detail about the arrest of the five Rab men could not be known immediately.
The seven were abducted on April 27 in the city and six bodies were spotted floating in the Shitalakkhya river on April 30. The seventh surfaced the next day.
Rab’s involvement with the killings came to light when Nazrul's father-in-law Shahidul Islam alleged that some Rab men had abducted and murdered the Narayanganj city councillor in exchange for Tk 6 crore.
He claimed that some workers saw Rab men abduct Nazrul near Shibu Market in Narayanganj on April 27.
Amid uproar over Rab personnel's alleged involvement in the abduction and killing of seven people, the High Court on May 5 ordered the government to keep the elite force from probing the incidents.
It also directed the government to form a seven-member committee headed by an additional secretary of the public administration ministry to investigate the brutal murders.
Three Rab officials -- Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana – were forced to retirement on May 6 over their alleged involvement with the abductions and murders.
Tareque was the commanding officer of Rab-11 in Narayanganj when the abductions and killings took place. He is also the son-in-law of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.
