Mayers scripts incredible win for Windies
What transpired on the fifth day of the first Test between Bangladesh and West Indies at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram yesterday will probably be regarded as one of the most amazing comebacks ever.
A brilliant Kyle Mayers double ton -- an unbeaten 210 off 310 deliveries -- saw the Windies snatch victory from the clutches of a clueless Bangladesh and leave everyone stunned. Having dominated for most part of the game and finishing on top the previous four days, the Tigers failed to show character when it mattered most.
Starting the day on 110 for three and in need of 285 more runs to win, the overnight batsmen Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner -- both of whom were on debut -- went on to bat till Tea, frustrating the bowlers who were in search of a breakthrough and stitching together a 216-run stand, most by two debutantes in fourth innings on Test debut.
Both batsmen seemed to be fairly comfortable against the Bangladeshi bowlers. And even when the likes of spinners Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan and left-arm pacer Mustafiur Rahman did create some chances, some sloppy fielding saw them go begging.
Taijul and Nayeem picked up two quick wickets just minutes after returning from Tea break but with Mayers set and determined at the crease, a win for the Windies seemed inevitable.
Mayers, who became the first cricketer to have scored 200 in the fourth innings on debut in Test cricket, saw his side through and over the line just before the scheduled cut off-time.
