Remove illegal structures from Hatirjheel in 7 days: HC
The High Court yesterday directed the authorities concerned of the government to demolish and remove structures built beyond the layout plan of the Hatirjheel-Begunbari project in Dhaka, within seven days.
In response to a writ petition, the court ordered the authorities to submit a report before it in two weeks after complying with the directive.
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam issued a rule asking the respondents to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to protect the Hatirjheel-Begunbari project in line with the layout plan.
Housing and public works secretary, chief executive officer of Dhaka South City Corporation, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) chairman, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner, OC of Hatirjheel Police Station, and project director of Hatirjheel-Begunbari project have been made respondents to the rule.
It also asked the latter four to continuously monitor that no structure is built in the project area beyond the layout plan. The court delivered the order and rule following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) on September 9 challenging the legality of the construction work.
Petitioner's counsel Manzill Murshid told the HC that some structures including restaurants have been built in the project area illegally, which are obstructing free movement of people in the area and have damaged the beauty of the project.
