‘Launch vigorous diplomatic initiative against Myanmar’s persecution of Rohingyas’
A parliamentary body today urged the foreign ministry officials to launch vigorous diplomatic initiative and raise voice against Myanmar government’s persecution of Rohingyas in the upcoming meeting of the UN General Assembly prominently to gain international support for a peaceful solution.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs came up with the suggestion at a meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with ruling Awami League lawmaker Dipu Moni in the chair.
In the meeting, officials at the Foreign Ministry informed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will deliver her speech at the UN General Assembly on September 21 and they have taken necessary measures to raise the Rohingya issue with due importance there.
They also informed the parliamentary watchdog that the foreign ministry is going to hold "Bangladesh Envoys’ Conference" in November with participation of all the ambassadors and high commissioners of the country working abroad.
The three-day long conference, first of its kind in the country, will start from November 7, meeting sources said.
Asked about the "Bangladesh Envoys’ Conference," AL lawmaker Faruk Khan, who was present at the meeting, said that alongside the Rohingya issue, the conference will also discuss on the country’s foreign policy, international relations, welfare of our overseas workers, flow of remittance, commerce and trade with different countries and challenge and prosperity.
He also said the conference will also discuss on the role of Bangladesh’s embassies and high commissions in this regard. “The conference will help to identify weakness of our embassies if any.”
