ACC asks Prof Yunus to appear tomorrow
Prof Muhammad Yunus and seven others have been asked to be present at the Anti-Corruption Commission office tomorrow to present their statements in a money laundering and embezzlement case.
The seven others are Grameen Telecom Managing Director Nazrul Islam, directors Parvin Mahmud, Nazneen Sultana, Muhammad Shahjahan, Nurjahan Begum, and SM Hajjatul Islam Latifi, and former managing director Ashraful Hasan.
ACC Deputy Director Gulshan Anwar Pradhan issued the letters on September 27.
ACC Chairman Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah yesterday told reporters that an investigator requested Prof Yunus to appear at the ACC office. "If he comes [to the ACC], it's good; if he doesn't, it's up to him. I have nothing to say in this regard."
The ACC chairman said, "A case has been registered, and now the investigating officer will decide whom he will call."
Asked whether Prof Yunus is being harassed, he said, "Why should he be harassed? Based on the allegations of embezzlement of workers' dividends, the ACC conducted an investigation and filed a case…. Why are you talking about harassment here?"
On May 30, ACC Deputy Director Gulshan filed a case accusing Prof Yunus, the chairman of Grameen Telecom, and 12 others of embezzling Tk 25.22 crore meant for the workers and employees of Grameen Telecom.
Earlier, ACC Director General (administration) Rezwanur Rahman said the factories inspection directorate sent the ACC several complaints against the board of directors of Grameen Telecom.
On July 28 last year, the ACC formed a three-member committee to investigate those complaints. As part of the investigation, the ACC interrogated six people several times in August last year.
The other accused in the case are lawyers Yusuf Ali and Jafrul Hasan Sharif, President of Grameen Telecom Workers-Employees Union Muhammad Kamruzzaman, General Secretary Firoz Mahmud Hasan, and representative of Grameen Telecom Workers-Employees Union Mainul Islam.
