NSU scam: 4 accused granted bail
A Dhaka court today granted bail to four people, including Ashaloy Housing and Developers Managing Director (MD) Amin Md Hilaly, after they surrendered before it and sought bail in a case filed for laundering around Tk 304 crore from the funds of North South University.
Three other accused are Ashaloy Housing and Developers Chairman Omar Faruk, and its directors Anwara Begum and Syed AK Haque
Judge Md Asaduzzaman of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court passed the order after their lawyer submitted two separate petitions, seeking bail in the case.
During today's hearing the defence told the court that five other accused were granted bail from different courts. So, their bail petition should be allowed as they were co-accused, the defence said.
The prosecution opposed it, saying the charges brought against them were primarily proved.
Moreover, four other accused were arrested following a High Court order after their surrender before it on May 22 last year. Their bail petitions were rejected on several dates considering the depth of offences brought against them in the case.
Earlier, the court had issued arrest warrants against Hilaly and the three others as they were shown as fugitives in the charge sheet.
So, their bail petitions should be rejected and they should be sent to jail, the prosecution added.
Upon hearing both the sides, the judge granted them bail in the case.
The court fixed July 12 for hearing on charge framing against the accused in the case.
On November 10 last year, ACC Deputy Director Farid Ahmed Patwary, also the case's investigation officer, submitted the charge sheet against nine people, including five former members of the board of trustees of NSU.
The five former trustees are Azim Uddin Ahmed, chairman of Mutual Group of Companies; Benajir Ahmed, managing director and CEO of Raymond Group of Industries; MA Kashem, chairman of Mutual Group of Industries; Rehana Rahman, managing director of Bengal Tradeways Ltd; Mohammed Shajahan, MD of Shah Fatehullah Textile Mills Ltd.
Of them, Kashem, Benajir, Rehana and Mohammed Shajahan were arrested following an order of the High Court on May 22 last year.
The HC on that day rejected their anticipatory bail petitions and also ordered Shahbagh police to arrest them immediately and to produce them before the trial court in 24 hours in connection with the case.
ACC Deputy Director Farid Ahmed Patwary filed the case with its integrated district office in Dhaka on May 5 last year against the four accused and also NSU Board of Trustees Chairperson Azim Uddin Ahmed.
Ashaloy Housing and Developers Managing Director Amin Md Hilaly was also made accused in the case.
