Stalemate at Simla talks

POPOV CALLS ON BANGABANDHU
Soviet Ambassador to Bangladesh Valentin Popov calls on Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman today at his official residence. He hands over a letter from the Soviet leaders to Bangabandhu. Later, Popov tells journalists that the letter is about maintenance of peace and stability in the South Asian region.
BHUTTO-INDIRA DIALOGUE POSTPONED
Talks between India and Pakistan in Simla enter second day with divisions emerging over several key issues. Pakistan places emphasis on handing over of prisoners of war and withdrawal of forces of both countries to their respective sides of the border. Pakistan insists on separate handling of each issue. Contrarily, India reiterates its position of settling all the issues within a single and holistic framework. Due to this disagreement the dialogue between ZA Bhutto and Indira Gandhi is postponed. However, a joint statement issued today states that both the parties are engaged in free and frank discussion to find peaceful solutions to all outstanding problems between the two neighbours.
FIRST RAILWAY BUDGET
Communication Minister Captain M Mansur Ali declares today the first railway budget of independent Bangladesh. The government allocates Tk 24 crore for the development and rehabilitation of the sector.
TK 5 LAKH FOR FLOOD AFFECTED FARMERS
The government allocates Tk 5 lakh for the farmers in Sylhet who have lost their harvest due to the recent onrush of upstream water. Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation will also provide Aman seeds to the affected farmers.
