Sudhir Chakravarti, renowned writer on folk culture, dies aged 86
Eminent researcher of Bangla folk culture and writer Sudhir Chakravarti died in a private hospital in Kolkata today. He was 86 years old.
Chakravarti died of age-related ailments, his family said.
His book "Bratya Lokayata Lalon" is considered a seminal contribution to the literature on Lalon Fakir.
Chakravarti has authored a number of books on the beliefs and songs in the villages of Bengal.
A former college teacher who taught Bangla literature, he was known for his untiring efforts to compile the songs of different tribes across remote villages of Bengal. He recorded his experience and knowledge in the field in his book "Gobhir Nirjan Pathey". He also penned books on Tagore and modern Bengali songs.
His book "Baul Fakir Katha" won the Ananda Puroskar in 2001 and was conferred the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award two years later.
