First National Biotechnology Summer School held
With the theme, "Biotechnology for future leadership', the first National Biotechnology Summer School, organised by National Institute of biotechnology (NIB) and Young Biotechnologists of Bangladesh, was recently held at Chattogram. Twenty-seven universities and twenty-five organisations participated in the event. Bangladeshi scientist and professor, Haseena Khan inaugurated the event. Vice Chancellor of University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC), Professor Nurul Absar, attended the event as the chief guest, whereas chairperson of Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka, Zeba Islam Seraj, attended as a special guest.
Students were trained on leadership, communication, team management, research methodology, idea generation, genome sequencing, using biotechnology against climate change, time management, computational biology and alternate careers. Fourty top scientists, academicians, journalists, leaders, and researchers trained the students.
The trainers were Shadhinata Padak awardee Professor Haseena Khan, TEDx speaker Professor Zeba Islam Seraj, Fullbright scholar Professor Zonaed Siddiki (Ctg Veterinary University), Mizanur Rahman (CEO, JMI Nipro Pharma), Dr Salimullah Khan (NIB), Dr Munia Amin (Head, R&D, Healthcare Pharma) Dr Mustak Ibn Ayub (research scholar of Oxford), Dr SM Mahbubur Rashid (Asst Prof, DU), Three Minute Thesis , Western Australia & Famelab winner Dr Adnan Mannan (teacher, Chittagong University),Uzzal Hossain (National Institute of Biotechnology) , Arif Khan (UODA), Munira SUltana (BYLC).
In the view exchange session, young researcher and corporate professionals were present such as Mahbub Hasan (CU), Muhammad Salman (Chevron), Mahmudul Hasan (Sylhet Agri Uni), Abdullah Al Zubayer (Bongobondhu Uni), Rafat Al Mahmud (Incepta Vaccines), Ikhtiar Zahid (Biotech Concern). The chief guest of the closing ceremony was Dr. Salimulllah Khan, Director General, NIB. Special guests were Professor Emran Bin Yunus from CMC, Dr SM Rafiqul Islam, Chair, Genetic Engineering Dept, Ctg. University, Professor Mohammad Shahedur Rahman, General Secretary, Bangladesh Association of Biotechnology Graduates. Students toured a virtual lab at the University of British Columbia and Kyushu University, conducted by Rashedul Rony and Dr. Rasel Das. Ten undergraduate and graduate students achieved travel grants. They were Rahagir Saleheen, Sohana Hossain, Sajjad Hossain, Saikat Rahman, Ebraheem Khalil Fahmid Islam Asma Salauddin and Shakil Ahmed Polash.
Radio Foorti was the exclusive radio partner and Matita was the hospitality partner. Mahmuda Kabir Shaon and Al Shahriar Akash got the best Summer school participant award. Bangladesh Association of Biotechnology Graduates and Global Network of Bangladeshi biotechnologists were the partners of the event, organised in association with Invent Technologies, Mars Syndicate, Biotech Concern, Bioted and Mechamind.
