Egypt will host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations between June 15 and July 13, Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Ahmad Ahmad announced in Dakar Tuesday.
The CAF executive committee preferred Egypt to South Africa as replacements for original hosts Cameroon, who were dropped due to delays in preparations and concerns over security.
It will be the fifth time Egypt stage the biennial showpiece of African football after 1959, when the country was called the United Arab Republic, 1974, 1986 and 2006. --Afp
Italian football remembers Astori on 32nd birthday
Tributes were paid to former Italian international footballer Davide Astori who died suddenly last year, on what would have been his 32nd birthday Monday.
Fiorentina captain Astori was found dead in his hotel room in the northeastern city of Udine on March 4, 2018 ahead of a Serie A match against Udinese.
"Always with us, happy birthday," read a banner across the gates of the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence, with the club posting a picture of Astori created as a mosaic on Instagram alongside "DA13 always with us".
"It would have been better to spend it with him but he is always with us even if he is not physically here," said Fiorentina midfielder Marco Benassi. --Afp
Mexico appoint Martino
Mexico presented Argentine manager Gerardo Martino as the new coach of the national team Monday, seeking to reach the football goal that has eluded them for more than three decades: the World Cup quarterfinals.
Martino, who has managed Barcelona and Atlanta United as well as the Argentine and Paraguayan national teams, announced he had accepted the job at a press conference in Mexico City, ending weeks of speculation that he had been tapped to succeed Colombia's Juan Carlos Osorio.
The man nicknamed "Tata," or papa, cut straight to the chase in discussing his mission for "El Tri": end the "quarterfinals curse" that has dogged the team for the past seven World Cups and reach the long-sought fifth match in Qatar in 2022. --Afp
