Hockey team's narrow defeat against Poland
Bangladesh youth hockey team lost their classification match against Poland 5-4 in the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires yesterday.
The boys in red and green were under the cosh early in the first half, conceding three goals within nine minutes of the 10-minute half. They, however, made a strong comeback in the second half, scoring four goals but also conceding two more to lose the game 5-4. Shohanur Rahman Shobuz scored twice while Shawon Sarowar and Hasan Mohammad scored a goal each for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh will take on Austria in the 7-8th place deciding match today.
Siddikur seven shots off the pace
Bangladesh golfer Siddikur Rahman shared eighth position in the UMA CNS Open Golf Championship at the end of the third round yesterday.
The 33-year-old golfer played two-under (70) in the third round at the Karachi Golf Club, trading five birdies for three bogeys. The two-time Asian Tour winner had an aggregate score of five-under (211) and was seven shots off the pace. Namchok Tantipokhakul of Thailand enjoyed the lead at 12-under (204), followed by his compatriot Jakraphan Premsirigorn at 11-under (205).
Zia 19th in Gujarat
Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman finished 19th in the 1st Gujarat International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament in Ahmadabad, Gujarat. Zia earned seven points from 10 games and was adjudged to have finished 19th by the tie-breaking system. IM Abu Sufian Shakil became 41st with 6.5 points, IM Mohammad Minhaz Uddin became 62nd while CM Ikramul Haq Siam became 79th with 6 points each.
Third generation double-centurion
When Shehzar Mohammad smashed 265 in a domestic game in Pakistan, he followed in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, uncle and two grand-uncles in scoring a first-class double-century.
Shehzar is the grandson of the legendary Pakistan cricketer Hanif Mohammad and son of Shoaib Mohammad, who played 45 Tests and 63 ODIs. Hanif's brothers Sadiq and Mushtaq also had double-hundreds in their careers, as did Sadiq's son Imran.
