Shooter Sabrina in poor health
Sabrina Sultana, a prominent former national shooter of Bangladesh, is now bedridden at the age of only 43 due to neuromyelitis optica, a disease that rendered her lower half almost completely paralysed.
Sabrina retired in 2013 and had since dreamt of building a career in coaching. However, her dreams have slowly faded ever since the disease suddenly forced her to be admitted to a hospital in the city.
“I have been suffering for three months. When I tried to walk at home, I felt a lot of pain. I am going through treatment but there is no improvement. The doctor advised me to go to Singapore for better treatment but to do that requires money which we don’t have,” an emotionally overwhelmed Sabrina informed over the phone.
Sabrina, a mother of two sons, sought help from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and affluent individuals.
“The honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina helps many with their treatments and so I am also seeking her kind help as an athlete who has some contributions to the country’s sports. I am really hoping that the Prime Minister will stand by me,” said Sabrina.
After beginning her career in 1985 at just the age of 11, Sabrina participated in shooting events for 28 years and won a lot of medals both nationally and internationally. She grabbed the limelight when she won a gold medal in the 50m rifle prone event in the 1997 Commonwealth Shooting Championship. Sabrina then bagged four gold medals later the same year in the South Asian Shooting Championship.
The Bangladesh Olympic Association yesterday contributed Tk five lakh for her treatment while the Bangladesh Shooting Sports Federation also plans to help the former national shooter.
