Ram outshines Ruman in Archery World Cup
Two-time national champion archer Ram Krishna Saha fought valiantly in the Archery World Cup (stage-3), but his three-match winning-run in the men's recurve individual event came to an end in the pre-quarterfinal when he suffered a 2-6 set points defeat at the hands of Brazilian Marcus D' Almeida of Brazil in Paris today.
Ram, who finished 56th in the qualification round, suffered 29-30, 27-26, 28-29 and 27-29 defeats in the pre-quarterfinals after putting in some brilliant performances in the first three rounds.
The man from Bangladesh Air Force had earlier defeated 52nd-ranked Shanzhar Mussayev of Kazakhstan's 6-4, 9th-ranked Daniel Castro of Spain 6-2 and 72nd-ranked Gasper Shajhar of Slovenia 6-2 respectively.
Other than Ram, experienced archer Ruman Sana, Hakim Ahmed Rubel and young Alif Abdul Rahman frustrated in the qualification rounds as well as in the knockout stages where all three were eliminated from the first round.
Like the male archers, all female archers, except Nasrin Akter, suffered defeats in the first round. Nasrin, however, advanced to the second round with a 6-2 win over Anastrassiya Bannaova before suffering a 3-7 defeat to Spanish Ines De Velasco in the second round.
However, both men's and women's teams made upsets in their respective team event as Bangladesh men's team comprising Ruman, Ram and Rubel beat 14th-ranked Turkey 5-2 to set their pre-quarterfinal clash against 3rd-ranked United States of America on Friday.
Bangladesh women's team comprising Diya Siddique, Nasrin Akter and Mahanaz Akter Monena beat Slovenia 6-0 to set their pre-quarterfinal clash against top-ranked Mexico on Friday.
