89 events at a budget of Tk 306 crore
State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russel informed the media that there will be a total of 89 international and national sporting events taking place in the country in commemoration of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman next year.
The minister was speaking after a meeting with sports federations regarding their preparations for the birth centenary celebrations.
“We want to observe the Mujib Year as a year of sporting renaissance. As part of this, we had presented a draft for 98 sporting events before the Bangabandhu’s Birth Centenary Celebration National Implementation Committee. The committee approved 89 of those events, of which 39 will be international while the rest will be national events to be held next year,” Ahsan said after a meeting with federation officials.
The minister also said that the estimated budged for these sporting events is Tk 306 crore, which will be acquired through both government funding and sponsorship.
“Close to 186 crore taka has been estimated to stage the international events and close to 120 crore taka for staging the national events. If the individual federations are not able to rope in sponsors, we will compile the overall sponsorship money and distribute those to the federations,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, the minister, expressing his concern over illegal gambling and casino businesses at sports clubs, said the clubs should be held accountable.
“Since most of the clubs are limited companies, the sports ministry cannot supervise the clubs. However, the accountability of these clubs should be ensured in the interest of sports,” Ahsan said.
