Brazil defender escapes 29-shot shootout
Tottenham defender Emerson Royal was caught in a horrific incident during his vacation back home in Brazil as he was the subject of an armed robbery. Emerson, however, managed to escape unharmed after a 29-shot shootout involving police.
"What happened was a worthy of a horror movie, I wouldn't wish it on anyone," Emerson's father told Globo Esporte in comments carried by Marca. "When the shots started, everyone started running from one side to the other."
The incident occurred in Sao Paulo, Emerson's home city. The 23-year-old is on vacation following a successful season in the Premier League with Tottenham that saw them finish fourth in the table to qualify for next season's Champions League.
Emerson has stated that he is safe and well and will speak soon.
According to reports, Emerson had just left a nightclub in Americana, Sao Paulo when he was targeted by robbers at around 3am. It was reported that he was taking photos with an off-duty policeman, who then walked him towards his car, when an individual pointed a gun at him and demanded his belongings.
The officer reportedly drew his gun and opened fire at the thief and thankfully Emerson was able to escape unharmed amid the hail of bullets. According to the Military Police, at least 29 shots were fired, one of which hit the assailant in the back and resulted in them going to a nearby hospital.
