BFF in disarray to resume BPL
Spike in Covid-19 cases in the country and subsequent imposition of lockdown has made things difficult for the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) to resume Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) from Friday.
The professional football league is scheduled to resume on Friday across four separate venues -- Dhaka, Cumilla, Munshiganj and Gazipur.
Lockdown has been imposed in seven districts including Munshiganj and Gazipur to restrict the movements of people and vehicles to curb the spread of the coronavirus while Cumilla has been separated from the capital due to the lockdown in Narayanganj, a district via the vehicles enter Cumilla.
In such a situation, the professional football league committee held an emergency meeting today and was forced to adjourn the meeting due to lack of adequate information about the proposed new venues inside Dhaka.
Though no BFF officials were interested in revealing the outcomes of the meeting, it has been learnt that one official proposed to declare the champions and runners-up on the basis of the current table and the season officially. Some officials, however, proposed to hold the professional league matches in practice grounds to complete the rest of the league.
The meeting also discussed whether it would be possible to move the team buses with the police protocol to play the matches in Munshiganj, Gazipur and Cumilla.
The meeting is supposed to be held today again and make a decision whether to play the league matches only at Bangabandhu National Stadium until the withdrawal of the lockdown of adjacent districts to Dhaka.
In another move, the meeting also could not make any decisions on Mohammedan SC's plea to defer their matches for 14 days following the Covid-19 positive cases of their 12 players and the Australian coach as no Mohammedan officials were present during the zoom meeting. It was however announced in the meeting that if a total of 13 players are sound and fit to play, then the clubs must take part in the scheduled fixtures.
Mohammedan SC are scheduled to face Abahani on Friday.
