Speedy trial law to stay 5yrs more
The cabinet today approved in principle the draft of speedy trial act to extend its effectiveness to five years more.
The existing law expires on April 6, said Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said while briefing the media after the meeting.
The amended law will be titled 'Law and Order Disruption Offence (Speedy Trial) (Amendment) Act, 2014'.
The draft will get final approval after a scrutiny by the law ministry, added the cabinet secretary.
"The law has survived the test of time and that's why its tenure has been extending repeatedly," he said.
The act was formulated in 2002 during the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami four-party coalition regime to prevent crimes like extortion and vandalism.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting held at Bangladesh Secretariat.
