The trainee doctors at BSMMU have been demanding an increase of monthly allowance from Tk 20,000 to Tk 50,000 – a demand which is justified.
On March 31, BTTB commercially launched GSM mobile phone through a private company, Teletalk. It has launched pre-paid sim card with a very cheap rate. People are very much crazy for this package because of some extra facilities which are better than those offered by other mobile companies. From morning, many people lined up to buy this package. Most of the people failed to buy this package because of an inadequate number of form . Though Teletalk management sent additional forms, but these were also inadequate for the huge demand. BTTB assured that the form would be available from the next week at all service centres. Some people have sold subscribers' form outside the exchange. People became very angry when they were unable to buy this package. Riot police and armed...
This is a sequel to Farid Bakht's article (DS: April 02) and a front page report (DS: April 04) on the vagaries of investment in power proposals. One wonders if these reports at all even prick the thick hide of officialdom? The need for power generation for progress and development is endlessly spelt out by our powers to be. Unfortunately, it is all talk and no action by the government, except cancelling old proposals and going for new ones. In contrast, none but the deprived users talk about loadshedding. Rarely, when the powers to be talk about it; it is to restrain us from using electricity with the threat of disconnection if official orders are not followed!...
The finding by Dr. Abdul Barakat, that 75% of our MPs spent Tk 128 crore to get elected astounded me. The question has to be asked, "What are these people after?" The altruistic purpose of serving the nation? I don't buy it!
I have heard of customs officers giving huge bribes to their superiors to get plum postings. They intend to recover the bribe money and make a profit in a short time. We all know what to expect from our customs officers.
Now, what can we expect from our elected representatives?
Obviously a man cannot be 'real smart' if he has problem of bad pronunciation, no matter how costly his dress might be! It's really beyond my understanding how far we can go if we cannot even pronounce a word correctly....
At the initiative of Bangladesh the leaders of India, Pakistan, Bhutan, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh reached a consensus and formed the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (Saarc) for peace and cooperation, socio-economic development and welfare of the teeming millions of South Asia....
In his letter (Daily Star, 05/04/05) concerning the recent triumph of Mr. Robert Mugabe in the Zimbabwe parliamentary election, Dr Rashiduzzaman Khan displays powers of observation denied to even the most acute viewers of elections....
I read the article captioned "Achieving excellence in classroom teaching" by Dr. ASM A Haseeb published in DS on 5 April. He wrote, " It is true that in this country there is generally lack of students' motivation for socio-politico-economic reasons, many of which are beyond the control of teachers." Factually, teachers' politics along with students' are directly linked to mainstream political parties, where intellectual freedom is needed most, but is sadly absent. That has a devastating effect on university education.
He also wrote, " Universities in advanced countries do not consider the views of students as a taboo. They rather take students' concern quite seriously and put continuous efforts to the quality of teaching." Admittedly, this is exactly what we need most.
Some time I think that I am doing a wrong. Doing a wrong by hating Pakistan.
When live cricket matches are shown in TV in our hall where Pakistan is competing, lots of students support Pakistan. I cannot do that. I always think about 71.Was that a dream? Or was that an error? If Pakistan cricket team come to our country then we go to the stadium with Pakistani flags. Our ladies are also seem attracted to the handsome cricketers of Pakistan. Some people say that they do not merge cricket and normal life. Ok, they are players. But they are players of Pakistan. A country from where some people killed a great number of human beings in our country.
The number was more than the total population of many countries in the world.
I am not doing wrong. I am sure of that.
Our country is small and over populated. When I was a small boy I saw in Dhaka and my district town Jessore a lot of paddy fields which are now filled with concrete junks. I do not mind to build in bad land, but a lot of good and low land, which grow good rice, now a days filled with concrete and a big chunk of our country's urban sites is built on that fertile land. If you visit the cities in Japan and Korea, you see the govt. does not allow building anything where good rice grows even in the urban areas. Our govt. is all the time busy with power and politics and also some of our so-called specialists, who were educated in the west, but did not learn how the other developed countries built their countries in a nice way. So, somebody in the country should take action or show how to...
