269 people leave Dhaka for Italy on Biman flight

A total of 269 people, most of whom are Bangladeshi expatriates, left Dhaka for Italy aboard a special chartered flight of Biman today.

They had been stranded in Bangladesh for around three months due to the suspension of regular flight operation following the global Covid-19 pandemic.

"Carrying the passengers, the special chartered flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) at 12:15pm, bound for Rome," said Tahera Khondoker, deputy general manager of Biman's public relations.

Earlier, the national airliner operated two special chartered flights on June 12 and June 17 from Dhaka, carrying 546 Bangladeshi citizens to Rome, Tahera said.

The government resumed flight operations on international routes on a limited scale on June 16, after more than three months of flight suspension since mid-March.

Only three airlines -- Biman, Qatar and Emirates -- have so far been given permission to operate flights from Dhaka.

Biman is operating one weekly flight on the Dhaka-London-Dhaka route, while Qatar and Emirates are operating three transit flights to Doha and Dubai respectively per week, according to sources at HSIA.

Special flight to Portugal tomorrow

A Biman spokesperson, while talking to The Daily Star, said that the national flag carrier will operate a special chartered flight tomorrow to Portugal's Lisbon from Dhaka in order to ferry Bangladeshi citizens stranded here.
