AL probe starts today to punish attackers
The Awami League (AL) probe body today starts its investigation into Wednesday's incident of abuse of four senior AL leaders outside the party's Dhanmondi office in capital.
The one-member committee headed by AL Presidium Member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury will interview the witnesses from 10:00am to 12:00noon at the AL Dhanmondi office.
Sajeda, however, has not been authorised to take punitive measures against the people responsible.
AL Acting General Secretary Mukul Bose, Organising Secretary Abdul Mannan, AL leaders AKM Jahangir Hossain, and Prof Abu Sayeed were abused by some party activists before and after the party's AL Central Working Committee (ALCWC) meeting.
The four leaders have so far identified seven people in connection with the incident.
"All together we have recognised five to seven people who were involved," AL Acting General Secretary Mukul Bose told The Daily Star yesterday adding that he himself identified two of them.
Since the acting party president Zillur Rahman has formed a probe body, they would await the committee's actions, Mukul said adding,"Then we will decide about further action."
Sajeda yesterday met Zillur at his Gulshan residence and talked about the matter for more than an hour.
Talking to the reporters after the meeting, she said that though she has been given seven working days' time, she can submit the report within three to four days.
She termed the incident of abuse of four leaders as "an outcome of sudden aggravation."
"After investigating the whole matter I will submit the report to the acting president, but the central committee of the party will take the punitive action," the AL leader said adding that she would talk to the eyewitness party workers and leaders, staffs of the Dhanmondi office, drivers of the victim leaders and if necessary, with the four leaders as well.
She firmly said that the party would definitely take action against the culprits.
Sajeda also observed that the incident might have been instigated in a bid to split the party.
The AL leader, however, said that she does not know any of them who had abused the party leaders.
Sajeda said that at the ALCWC meeting after Eid, they would take up the issues of resuming indoor politics across the country and release of detained party president Sheikh Hasina.
The AL at present has been finding it difficult to keep the party united following the manhandling of the leaders by the agitating party activists.
