Metro Rail: Agargaon-Motijheel part to open by Nov
The Agargaon-Motijheel section of metro rail will be opened by November this year, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said yesterday.
Besides, the airport to Tejgaon section of Dhaka Elevated Expressway will be inaugurated within this fiscal year, he said, adding that 100 bridges will be opened on a single day in June and the country's first 100 electric buses are going to be added to the BRTC fleet by November this year.
He said these after a contract-signing ceremony at his ministry.
The Roads and Highways Department signed the contract with a consortium of consultants for Kewatkhali Bridge in Mymensingh.
LEA Associates South Asia Pvt Ltd of India, Yongma Engineering Company Ltd of South Korea, and Desh Upodesh Limited and Kranti Associates Ltd of Bangladesh will provide the consultancy services for four years at a cost of Tk 59.94 crore, according to sources.
Civil works of the country's largest steel-arch bridge in Mymensingh are expected to start in August this year under a Tk 3,263.63 crore project, said Project Director Noor E-Alam.
Quader said preparation for opening the metro rail up to Motijheel is at the "final stage" and he is hopeful of inaugurating this part by November.
The Uttara-Agargaon section of the metro rail was opened to public in December last year. Earlier, the authorities announced that the second phase from Agargaon to Motijheel would be opened in December this year.
The government opened 100 bridges on November 7 last year.
Quader said 100 electric buses would be added to the fleet of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation by November. Eighty of the double-decker AC buses will operate in Dhaka and 20 in Chattogram, he added.
Construction of Dhaka Elevated Expressway from airport to Kutubkhali on Dhaka-Chattogram highway was going on under Public Private Partnership model.
