BNP leaders have alleged that their activists in Tangail are leaving their homes owing to fear of being arrested in police raids ahead of the December 10 rally in Dhaka.
According to local BNP leaders, police have already filed 10 cases against around 200 BNP men and other associate organisations and over 600 unnamed people in Tangail in the last two weeks.
Mohammad Ali, sub-inspector of Sakhipur Police Station filed a case against 88 BNP leaders and activists and 38 unnamed people. In this case, police arrested four senior leaders of upazila BNP, Krishak Dal and Jubo Dal on Wednesday night.
Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Sakhipur Police Station, confirmed the arrests.
Sakhipur Upazila BNP President Shahjahan Saju and General Secretary Abdul Baset said, this is an instance of a "ghost case".
Durjoy Hode Shuvo, president of Tangail district unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, said police had already arrested several leaders of the organisation without a warrant and later showed them arrested in false cases.
Meanwhile Khandakar Rashedul Alam, president of Tangail district unit of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, said the leaders and activists are not being able to stay in their homes due to fear of arrests.
Yet there is no lack of enthusiasm among BNP men centering the Dhaka rally, said advocate Farhad Iqbal, general secretary of district BNP unit.
Many activists will start heading for Dhaka from December 5, he said.
"About 25,000 leaders and activists of BNP and its associate organisations from Tangail are expected to attend the grand rally," Farhad added.
Shariful Islam, Tangail's additional superintendent of police (crime) said investigation in the cases filed against BNP activists is underway and it won't be right to comment about cases that are under investigation.
