AL-backed mayoral candidate Khair Abdullah visits Barishal
Ruling Awami League-nominated mayoral candidate Abul Khair Abdullah visited Barishal city today.
This was his first visit after securing the party's ticket.
Flanked by some of the party's central leaders, Khair went to Bibir Pukur area of the city where he received a civic reception.
Speaking at the programme, Khair said, if elected, he would turn Barishal into a modern and developed city.
Addressing the function as chief guest, AL presidium member Jahangair Kabir Nanak sought votes for Khair.
However, many AL men -- followers of Khair's nephew and incumbent mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah -- were not present at the ceremony, reports our Barishal correspondent.
The programme was mostly joined by anti-Sadiq faction, said locals.
Asked why the partymen did not join, Gazi Nazmul Hossain Litu, joint general secretary of Barishal city unit AL, said, they were not aware of the reception.
"A meeting will be held soon in presence of leaders and activists of the party's Barishal city and district unit. Decision on what will be our role in the upcoming city election will be taken there," Litu, who is a follower of Sadiq, told The Daily Star.
