Police-mob clash in Chandpur: Death toll now 4
Another person died last night from the clash that occurred between police and mob in Chandpur's Hajiganj upazila, following reports of "demeaning the Holy Quran" in Cumilla.
The deceased was identified as Shamim (19) of Randhunimura area at Barakul union of the upazila and the total number of deaths from the incident now stands at four, confirmed Md Harunur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Hajiganj Police Station, reports our Chandpur correspondent.
The other three deceased were -- Alamin (18) of Barakul union of the upazila, Yeasin Hossain Hridoy (15) of Randhunimura area, and Bablu (30) hailing from Chapainawabganj.
"The deceased's bodies will be handed over to their families after their autopsies are completed, this afternoon," said the OC.
Meanwhile, seven people were arrested in connection with yesterday's clash and police are yet to announce their names.
"We are preparing to file a case regarding the matter at the police station," added the Hajiganj Police Station OC.
"My brother died at Cumilla Medical College Hospital at 11:30pm yesterday after police shot him. He was selling bananas from a van," Shamim's brother Ripon said.
Local media outlets reported that at least 60 people, including journalists, police and locals, were injured in the clash.
Chandpur Superintendent of Police Milon Mahmud said, "We did not shoot anyone on purpose. We fired 139 rounds of bullets to bring the situation under control."
Hajiganj Police ASP Sohail Mahmud, Police Station OC Harunur Rashid and 23 other policemen were injured in the incident. At present, six policemen are admitted to the Hajiganj Health Complex.
