Int’l Mother Language Day: Flowers worth Tk 3 crore sold in Jashore
Flower growers in Gadkhali of Jashore have sold flowers worth around Tk 3 crore today, on the occasion of International Mother Language Day this year.
After getting good prices for flowers on the occasion of Pohela Falgun, which marks the first day of spring and Valentine's Day, the flower farmers have also managed to sell the flowers as per their target on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, reports our Benapole correspondent.
Talking to this correspondent, Bangladesh Flowers Society President Abdur Rahim said, "We were worried about the government's restriction following the surge of Covid-19 infection. But flower sales have boomed since the coronavirus infection rate started lowering. People bought flowers from the market as per their desire. There was a good sale of flowers on the occasion of Pohela Falgun, Valentine's Day and International Mother Language Day."
Flowers worth Tk 3 crore were sold in Jashore only on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, Abdur Rahim added.
Flower grower Anwar Hassan said in the last two days, the farmers of Gadkhali charged each rose Tk 12/13 per rose while gerberas sold for TK 8-10 per variety. Tuberose sold for Tk 1,800 per thousand sticks, Gladiolus sold Tk 1,000 to 2,000 and marigolds sold Tk 1500 per thousand.
According to the Bangladesh Flower Society, there are about 6,000 flower farmers in Jashore. They cultivate different types of flowers in 1,500 hectares of land.
They produce 11 types of flowers in different fields of Gadkhali, Panisara, Navaran, Nirbaskhola of Jhikargachha upazila.
Gadkhali is the largest flower market in the country on both sides of Jashore Road in Gadkhali for selling flowers produced by farmers.
The flower market has been upping with the presence of buyers and sellers since two days ago.
During the visit, this correspondent found that hundreds of florists were busy selling flower arrangements of roses, tuberose, marigolds, gladiolus, gerberas.
Some were keeping flowers in vans, bicycles or baskets and are negotiating with Dhaka and local traders for flower prices.
Wholesale florists were buying more flowers from the market than on other days due to increased demand for flowers over the last two days.
Florist Bablur Rahman said flower selling has started increasing snice the Valentine's Day. Satisfactory flowers have been sold on Valentine's Day, Pahela Falgun and the mother language day.
Farmer Ismail Hossain said seven types of tulip flowers of different colors have blossomed in his five decimals of land. Tulip started blooming on his land from the last week of January. All the flowers of the field have been sold on International Mother's Day and Valentine's Day.
