Implement Marrakesh Treaty under Copyright Act
Speakers at a programme yesterday urged the government to implement the Marrakesh Treaty under the Copyright Act as soon as possible.
They made the call at a consultation meeting titled, "Marrakesh Treaty Accession Progress and Way Forward", held at the Auditorium of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics in the capital's Agargaon.
The event was organised by the Visually Impaired Peoples Society (VIPS), with the support of Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) and Sightsavers Bangladesh.
Daud Miah, NDC, registrar of copyrights at Bangladesh Copyrights Office, said Bangladesh signed and ratified the treaty and the work of formulating the copyright law of Bangladesh in line with it is almost final.
Md Jahangir Alam, general secretary of VIPS, described the treaty as a blessing for visually impaired people and emphasised that its effective implementation under the Copyright Act of Bangladesh would ensure the right and freedom to read books for over half a crore visually impaired people in the country.
Nazrana Yasmin Hira, project coordinator at MJF, highlighted the need to implement the treaty so that visually impaired persons can have the freedom to read books without any restrictions.
The speakers stressed the importance of amending the existing copyright law of the country to implement the treaty, which is a copyrighted method that removes barriers to creating published books in printed letters for the visually impaired and reading disabilities in an accessible manner.
