ICAO to help Bangladesh develop aviation sector
International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) will help build capabilities, provide training and prepare a masterplan for developing a sustainable and futuristic aviation sector in Bangladesh, said its secretary general Juan Carlos today.
It is possible to turn Bangladesh to a regional aviation hub through liberalisation of air transport, he also said.
He made the remarks at a press conference on the closing day of 58th conference of Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which began on October 15, at a hotel in the capital.
Dhaka hosted the event after 38 years.
Juan Carlos said he witnessed the rapid development of civil aviation in Bangladesh due to effective leadership.
"ICAO has spoken to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh chairman, so that we can support this vision to rapidly develop civil aviation sector and utilise the incredible infrastructure that you are building in Bangladesh," he said.
"We signed an important cooperation agreement with Bangladesh [on October 17]. ICAO's support and activities will contribute towards developing those capabilities," Juan Carlos also said.
The event, themed "Promoting ICAO Gender Equality Programme in conjunction with Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) Initiative", was participated by 500 foreign delegates, representing 47 countries and 11 international organisations.
Caab chairman Air Vice Marshal M Mafidur Rahman presided over the conference, which covered various critical aspects of aviation sector, including aviation safety and security, air navigation and transport development, facilitation, environmental disaster prevention, capacity building, and practical implications.
