Heavy rain, flood, power outage disrupt life in Bandarban
Incessant rainfall in the last few days has led to flooding in many areas across Bandarban.
Many villages of Ruma, Thanchi, Rowangchhari, Lama, and Alikadam upazilas have been marooned due to the sudden rise in water level of Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers.
As of today, most of the government and private institutions, shops, businesses and even fire stations in the five upazilas were submerged in water, reports our local correspondent .
Locals told our correspondent that they have been experiencing a power outage since yesterday afternoon.
As there was no electricity, the batteries in their mobile phones have died, leaving them incapable of communicating in case of emergencies.
They also said due to heavy rains in the last six days, water from Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers started entering their houses.
Flood has also disrupted road communications between the upazilas and no vehicles could ply the roads, they added.
Meanwhile, some people who took shelter in elevated areas of the upazilas claimed that they were facing severe shortage of clean water.
Bandarban recorded 668 mm rainfall in the last seven days. From 9:00am yesterday to 9:00am today, 295 mm rainfall was recorded, Emdadul Haque, officer-in-charge of Bandarban Weather Office, told The Daily Star this morning.
The rainfall is likely to continue for another week, he added.
At least 70 families have taken shelter at Thanchi Government High School and 30 families at Balipara Secondary High School in Bolipara union, confirmed Thanchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Abul Mansur.
He also said members of the upazila health complex, fire service, Youth Red Crescent and Thana Police are ready for any emergency.
Six schools have been declared as shelters centres in four unions of Thanchi upazila. Food will be provided to the people coming to the shelter.
People living in vulnerable places in all upazilas of Bandarban were asked to come to shelter homes as there was a possibility of landslides due to heavy rains.
Members of the fire service and civil defence are conducting drives in different areas with the help of the local administration.
Deputy Commissioner Shah Mojaheed Uddin earlier said 192 temporary shelter centres have been opened and 41 medical teams have been kept ready to deal with any emergency situation.
