Govt Warehouse: Sands, stones found in wheat consignment

Twenty-eight sacks filled with sands and stones were found during the unloading of trucks that carried a large wheat consignment to the government food warehouse in Chuadanga.
Following the incident, the warehouse authority formed a three-member probe committee and filed a case in this connection.
A total of 300 tonnes of wheat was supposed to be delivered to the warehouse as per the agreement through transport contracts with Khulna's Sarkar Enterprise, Jonaki Enterprise, and Sunrise Enterprise.
According to the district food controller's office, 100 tonnes of wheat was delivered in the first shipment on Friday.
On Sunday morning, the second shipment arrived at the warehouse that was supposed to contain another 100 tonnes of wheat.
While unloading the sacks, authorities found 28 sacks filled with sands and stones.
A total of 3 tonnes and 771 kg of wheat was stolen from six trucks, District Food Controller AKM Shahidul Islam told The Daily Star.
"The wheat was properly loaded onto the trucks from Khulna's Ghat No. 4. There was no way for the sacks to be changed there. The sacks must've been switched on the road."
"A three-member committee headed by Alamdanga Upazila Food Controller Abdul Hamid has been formed to investigate the incident," he added.
Maksud Alam Khwaja, president of the Khulna Divisional Food Contractor Transport Association, told The Daily Star that he was in charge of transporting the wheat to Chuadanga's government food warehouse.
He claimed the second shipment was sent to the destination as per the directives.
"Each sack was loaded, sealed, and then picked up," he added.
Shahidul Islam, additional divisional commissioner (revenue) of Khulna, told The Daily Star that instructions were issued at the district level to investigate the incident. "An inquiry committee has also been formed at the Directorate General of Food in Dhaka."
Chuadanga Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Hossain said a case was filed with the station in this regard accusing six drivers and six helpers.
Police arrested three helpers while the others escaped from the scene soon after the incident, he added.
