Australian mission lauds women athletes
The Australian High Commission in Dhaka has celebrated the accomplishments of women in sports, who can serve as role models for millions of girls across the country.
"We celebrate their achievements as they are champions of women's empowerment, and can inspire women and girls across Bangladesh," said Australian High Commissioner Jeremy Bruer at the Australia Day event in the Australian High Commission Recreation Centre on Tuesday evening.
Champion players Quamrun Nahar Dana [badminton], Mabia Akhter [weightlifting], Mahfuza Khatun Shila [swimming], Diya Siddique [archery], Sharmin Akhter Ratna [shooting], and women cricket team of Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Pratishtan (BKSP) were among the athletes present at the event.
Bruer described Australia Day as an occasion that celebrates a modern and multicultural Australia. Besides, it is a day to reflect upon the country's 60,000-year-old history and to acknowledge indigenous Australians' fundamental place in Australia's story.
Education Minister Dipu Moni was chief guest at the event, which was also attended by members of parliament, diplomats, senior officers from the Bangladesh Armed Forces, other ministries, leaders from business, development, humanitarian, political, civil society, and media.
