Demand for fertilisers: Dinajpur farmers remove road block after assurance
Hundreds of farmers of Kaharol upazila in Dinajpur blocked a road for around one and a half hours demanding fertilisers today (August 19, 2022).
They removed the blockade after official assurance that fertilisers would be provided to them after a list of farmers is prepared.
The farmers took position on the road around noon when they did not get any fertiliser even after queueing at various fertiliser shops in Kaharol Bazar, our Dinajpur correspondent reports.
Rafiqul Islam, a farmer, said farmers were not getting fertilisers in the area for the last few days. Vendors have been selling fertilisers at am extra cost of Tk 100 to Tk 200 per sack, he alleged.
He also said that the local administration stopped selling fertilisers in the upazila from yesterday (August 18, 2022) afternoon.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Abu Jafar Md Sadeque said there are 17 fertiliser dealers of BADC and 10 of BCIC in the upazila. Some farmers have alleged irregularities against the dealers in the distribution of fertilisers.
Meanwhile godowns of 10 BCIC and BADC fertiliser dealers have been sealed in the upazila over corruption allegations, he added.
Fertilisers were supposed to be distributed in the presence of agriculture department officials from this morning but farmers blocked the road as they did not get the fertiliser, the official added.
Farmers withdrew the blockade when Upazila Nirbahi Officer Manirul Islam and Agriculture Officer Sadeque assured them about making a farmers list and told them of distributing fertiliser to listed farmers.
The blockade continued till around 1:30pm.
