Pre-UP election violence: One killed in clash in Rangamati’s Kaptai
A union parishad member was killed in a clash between supporters of two chairman candidates of the upcoming UP election in Rangamati's Kaptai upazila last night.
The deceased, Sajibur Rahman (47), was a member of Kaptai Union Parishad, said Nasir Uddin officer-in-charge of local police station.
Five people -- Abdul Mannan Rana, Aktar Alam, Mahbul Alam, Nuru Uddin Sumon and Md Jalil -- were injured in the incident, our Bandarban correspondent reports quoting Aungswe Chaine Chowdhury, president of Kaptai upazila unit of Awami League.
Among the injured, Jalil was rushed to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital in critical condition, said Aungswe.
"Sajibur was a member of Rangamati district unit of Swechchhasebak League while all the injured are local AL leaders and activists," said Aungswe.
According to locals, supporters of rebel candidate Mohiuddin Patwari Badal clashed with the supporters of Awami League-backed chairman candidate Abdul Latif in Natun Bazar area of Jetighat in Kaptai last night.
Sajibur was a supporter of Abdul Latif, locals said.
Members of law enforcement agencies have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, said the OC.
Elections in Kaptai, Raikhali and Wagga union parishad of Kaptai upazila are scheduled to be held on November 11.
