Only 35 % votes cast in Tangail-7 by-polls
The Tangail-7 by-polls saw a low voter turnout with only 35 percent votes cast today, said Assistant Returning Officer Kamrul Hasan.
"Around 35 percent votes were cast in the by-election," he said, reports out Tangail correspondent.
The voting using electronic voting machines (EVMs) started at 8:00 am in 121 centres of the constituency and ended at 4:00 pm.
No untoward incident occurred during the election, reports our correspondent.
Jatiya Party nominated candidate Jahirul Islam Jahir however, alleged that his polling agents were driven out from many polling centres.
The parliamentary seat became vacant after the death of AL lawmaker Ekabbar Hossain on November 16.
Earlier in the day, Returning Officer Shahedunnabi Chowdhury said he visited several polling centres and found a low presence of the voters.
The five candidates contesting in the by-polls are Khan Ahmed Shuvo (Awami League), Jahirul Islam Jahir (Jatiya Party), Golam Nawjab Chowdhury Power (Bangladesh Workers' Party), Rupa Roy Chowdhury (Bangladesh Congress Party), and independent Nurul Islam.
BNP did not take part in the by-polls.
