Khulna city polls: BNP sets up monitoring cells
Khulna city BNP has taken a strong stance by directing its leaders and members to refrain from participating in election campaigns and casting their votes in the upcoming Khulna City Corporation elections.
In order to strictly enforce its decision to boycott the elections, the party has set up "secret" monitoring cells in each ward.
A cell with 21 members in each ward has been established by the BNP city unit in Khulna to carry out the party's directives and address any violations.
This cell will keep a close eye on the activities of party leaeders and activists. The party will take disciplinary action based on the monitoring cells' report if any member is found to have cast a ballot on the election day -- June 12.
In addition, the Khulna city BNP has announced that it will take organisational measures against any candidate who participates in the KCC election despite the party's decision to boycott it, or if there are specific complaints.
So far, 11 leaders of the city unit BNP have received show cause notices for their involvement in the election campaign. The party has also declared that any member found to have voted in this election will be permanently expelled from the party.
Shafiqul Alam Tuhin, member secretary of the Khulna city unit BNP, said the 11 leaders and activists, including those affiliated with BNP, have been issued show cause notices due to their alleged support for candidates associated with the current Awami League candidate.
"The notices require them to submit a written response, explaining why no organisational action should be taken against them," he added.
The convener of the Khulna city unit BNP, Shafiqul Alam Mana, said any BNP member going to the polling station to vote will face expulsion from the party. Party activists have been duly informed of this decision, he added.
