19 elected unopposed chairman to their zila parishads
At least nineteen candidates were elected unopposed chairman to their zila parishad as only one candidate each filed nomination till the last date of submitting nomination papers today.
The number of unopposed elected candidates may increase as there are 12 more zila parishads where two candidates submitted nomination to contest in the chairman post, according to the Election Commission statistics.
The 19 zila parishads where the candidates were elected unopposed in the chairman post are: Gopalganj, Chapai Nawabganj, Jhalakathi, Tangail, Thakurgaon, Naogaon, Narayanganj, Feni, Borguna, Bagerhat, Bhola, Madaripur, Munshiganj, Moulvibazar, Laxmipur, Lalmonirhat, Shariatpur, Sirajganj and Sylhet.
According to sources, most of the candidates elected opposed are ruling Awami League men. EC on August 23 announced that the Elections at 61 zila parishads will be held using electronic voting machines on October 17, around four months after the parishads were dissolved by the government.
