Student sent to jail for Facebook post
An arrested college student has been sent to jail for reportedly uploading a Facebook post about Nupur Sharma, suspended BJP leader in India, who made derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Before his arrest, agitating locals put garlands of shoes around the student's neck. A college teacher, who allegedly tried to protect him, faced the same fate.
The incident happened in the presence of police, said eye-witnesses, seeking anonymity.
Although the incident went viral on social media, police said they don't know whether such incident of putting garlands of shoes happened.
Police and locals said Rahul Dev Roy, an 11th-grader of Mirzapur United Degree College in Narail Sadar upazila uploaded the Facebook post on June 17.
The next morning, Rahul's college mates asked him to delete the post, which Rahul denied.
Later, the agitating students demanded punishment for Rahul. Then, acting principal Swapon Kumar kept Rahul in his room and informed police. Rahul's father Babul Dev Roy from Arpara village also rushed to the college.
By this time, several hundreds of agitating locals went to the college premises and alleged that the teacher, Swapon, was trying to protect Rahul.
Moments later, police rushed to the spot and tried to bring Rahul to the police station.
At one stage, locals clashed with police leaving at least 10 injured. Police lobbed tear canisters, said locals.
While police were taking Rahul, Babul and Swapon to the police station, agitating people intercepted them and put garlands of shoes around the neck of Rahul and Swapon.
After the incident, Md Faruk, a local madrasa teacher, filed a case under Digital Security Act, against Rahul, said Mohammad Shawkat Kabir, officer-in-charge of Narail Sadar Police Station.
Police kept the student arrested. But the father and college teacher were released later, the OC added.
