Somiuddin opened fire on Mohib Ullah first
Noor Kamal alias Somiuddin, who was arrested by Rab on Sunday night, led the killing mission of Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah in 2021.
He was the first member of the killing team who opened fire on the Rohingya leader, Khandaker Al Moin, Rab's legal and media wing director, told a press conference in Cox's Bazar today.
The elite force arrested Somiuddin from the Kutupalang area along with seven firearms on Sunday.
The chief of a 20-member "killer group" of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa), Somiuddin, 48, was also involved in the killing of a senior intelligence agency officer at the Ghumdhum border of Naikhongchhari upazila in Bandarban in November 2022, he said at the press meet.
On September 29, 2021, armed assailants shot Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah dead at his office in Kutupalong refugee camp in Ukhiya.
Shortly after the murder, Mohib's brother Habib Ullah claimed that members of Arsa, locally known as Al-Yakin, were behind the killing.
On June 13 last year, police pressed charges against 29 Rohingyas in the case filed over the murder.
In today's briefing, Rab director Moin said just days before Mohib Ullah was killed, Somiuddin held a secret meeting in a nearby camp to finalise the murder plan.
More than 15 members of the gang took part in the killing mission, he said.
Somiuddin first shot Mohib Ullah and escaped from the spot firing in the air, he added.
Arsa chief Ataullah had regular contact with Somiuddin, he said, adding he was accused in at least 15 cases on various charges including murder, kidnapping and possessing weapons.
The Rab official said Somiuddin joined Arsa during his stay in Myanmar in 2016 and received training for a year. In 2017, he entered Bangladesh as refugees and started living in camp-7.
According to Rab, Somiuddin and his group members were involved in killing of several Head Majhis (community leader) including Shafiq, Jasim, Nur Bashar and Salam.
Apart from targeted killings, the group is involved in abduction, extorting ransom and brutal torture.
