HC issues rule on compensating teen who lost his arms in electrocution
The High Court today issued a rule asking the respondents to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to compensate the family of Md Sheikh Sadi, a class eight student of Dhamrai in Savar, with Tk 1.5 core for losing his hands after being electrocuted in July last year.
Secretary at the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources; chairman of Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB); chairman of Dhaka Polly Biddut Somittee-3, Genda, Savar, Dhaka, and its deputy general manager at Dhamrai zonal office have been made respondents to the rule.
The HC bench of Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Mohammad Showkat Ali Chowdhury issued the rule following a petition filed by victim Sheikh Sadi's father Md Jasim Uddin seeking compensation from the respondents for the negligence of the BREB officials to maintain the electricity that caused the tragic accident.
Petitioner's lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir told The Daily Star that his client's son was a student of class VIII of Bornomala School, Dhamrai.
Around 12:00pm on July 15, 2022, he went to a nearby lake of the Dhanshiri residential area for taking a bath. When he jumped into the lake water, he suddenly got electrocuted by a hanging electric wire and both of his hands caught fire and burned.
Locals rescued him and took him to Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex.
The doctors referred him to Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka for better treatment. Since both of his hands were seriously burned, the doctors had to cut off his both hands to save his life.
