HC grants permanent bail to former SP Babul Akter in DSA case
The High Court today granted permanent bail to former superintendent of police Babul Akter in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Aminul Islam granted bail to Babul Akhter, who is now in jail in his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu murder case, after hearing a bail petition filed by him.
Babul's father and brother are on bail and journalist Elias Hossain is abroad, Babul's lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir told The Daily Star.
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Chattogram Metro's Superintendent of Police Naima Sultana filed the case with Khulshi Police Station on October 17 last year against four people including Babul and expatriate journalist Ilias Hossain on charges of making false and derogatory statements about her in a video uploaded on social media.
Babul's brother Habibur Rahman Labu and his father Abdul Wadud Miah were the other two accused in the case.
In her complaint, Naima alleged, "In order to implement an unknown agenda, a 42:21-minutes-long video was made with false statements and uploaded on YouTube."
"All these things published in the video are completely false, motivated. The false defamatory statement has been published to assassinate my character due to the proper investigation of SP Babul Akhter's case and to defame me in the police department and in public," she alleged in the case.
Meanwhile, the same HC bench kept stand over (waiting) for delivering verdict on another bail petition of Babul in the case filed by PBI Chief Banaj Kumar Majumder under the DSA.
He lodged the case on September 27 last year against Babul and three others with Dhanmondi Police Station on charges of spreading false and untrue information regarding the Mitu murder case.
On June 5, 2016, Babul's wife Mitu was stabbed and shot dead while she was taking her son to his school bus stop at the port city's GEC intersection. After the murder, Babul filed a case against three unidentified men with the Panchlaish Police Station.
Later PBI took over the case from DB of CMP.
On May 11 last year, Chattogram PBI summoned Babul to its office for interrogation. He failed to give satisfactory answers to the detectives and was taken into PBI custody.
The following day, Mitu's father filed a murder case against eight people, making Babul the prime accused in the case. Mitu's father alleged that Babul is the mastermind of the killing and he killed his wife over extramarital affairs.
