Getting cousin to serve his jail sentence: Rab arrests absconding convict
In 2010, Shohag alias Boro Shohag (34) shot a man dead in Dhaka's Kadamtali area and got arrested. Four years later, he left jail on bail and subsequently went into hiding.
On December 28, 2017, a Dhaka court sentenced him to life imprisonment in absentia.
The story takes a cinematic turn from this point.
Shohag managed to get his "drug addict" cousin -- Md Hossain (35) -- to assume his identity and surrender before the court. Since 2018, Hossain has been in Dhaka Central Jail.
Rapid Action Battalion disclosed the information today after arresting Shohag from Mitford Hospital area on Saturday when he went to take Covid-19 vaccine before fleeing the country.
"Shohag told Hossain that he would get Tk 5,000 every month for serving his sentence and that he would get him out in just three months. But that didn't happen," Rab-10 Commanding Officer Mahfuzur Rahman, told the press briefing today.
In October last year, the court came to know about the forgery and issued a warrant against Shohag. Shohag forged his national identification card, changing his father's name, date of birth and his passport -- paying Tk 10,000 to a broker, Rab said.
"He got a tourist visa for United Arab Emirates and planned to flee the country for good. He completed almost all procedures to leave the country. As he needed to get the second dose of the Covid vaccine, he went to hospital when the Rab team nabbed him," said the official.
The Rab CO said that the Prisons Authorities should have identified it long ago as they had the data. There might be some negligence, he added.
Rab said that four people including Shohag were made accused in Humayun Kabir Titu murder case. After a journalist reported about "fake Shohag" in jail in 2021, the matter came into the knowledge of the court, and it ordered a probe. A police report confirmed the matter, following which the court issued an arrest warrant against Shohag.
Rab said Shohag is a drug trader. He has been accused in 10 cases including two for murder, two for arms dealing and six for drug peddling.
Now, another case will be filed against him for the forgery, said the Rab CO.
