ADC Harun came under attack first, claims DB chief
The chief of the police's Detective Branch today claimed that suspended Additional Deputy Commissioner (Ramna Division) Harun-or-Rashid came under attack first at Birdem Hospital on Saturday evening.
The president's Assistant Personal Secretary Azizul Haque led the attack, DB chief Harun Or Rashid told reporters at his office.
The incident of attacking police should also be investigated, he added.
ADC Harun allegedly assaulted two central Chhatra League leaders inside the Shahbagh Police Station Saturday night.
"If he [Azizul] wished, he could have informed the higher authorities of police. Instead, he called in some people and chased a police officer in front of many others inside the hospital, broke his glasses and hit him. I think it should be investigated," the DB official said.
He said that the incident of torture of Chhatra League leaders began at Birdem Hospital.
The DB chief said that the police never take responsibility for personal activities of any of its officials.
"I think the investigating officer will independently investigate the incident and give a report. A three-member inquiry committee is conducting the probe properly and impartially. The investigation report will be submitted soon. Then we will come to know what happened."
This newspaper could not reach Azizul for comments as he did not answer phone calls or text messages.
Victims and other BCL leaders alleged that ADC Harun along with several other cops tortured BCL Organising Secretary Anwar Hossain Naeem and Science Affairs Secretary Sharif Ahmed Munim at Shahbagh Police Station Saturday night. Another BCL leader who came to their rescue was also assaulted.
The government on Monday suspended ADC Harun from his post for his alleged involvement in the attack.
BCL leaders who spoke to The Daily Star earlier said Harun and a female police official, ADC Sanjida Afrin, were at Birdem Hospital on Saturday. Around 8:30pm, the female official's husband Azizul went there along with the two BCL leaders where an altercation ensued between the Harun and Azizul.
The ADC called in cops and took the two Chhatra League leaders to Shahbagh Police Station around 9:00pm where police tortured them for about an hour, BCL leaders alleged.
Sanjida yesterday said she went to Birdem hospital for treatment. As Harun was her colleague and in charge of that DMP zone, he helped her getting the doctor's appointment there. Her husband and some BCL leaders went there and picked a fight.
Among the injured BCL leaders, Naeem is receiving treatment at a city hospital.
DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq today visited Naeem at the hospital and inquired about his treatment.
