Actor Sohel Chowdhury murder: Tribunal asks IGP to produce evidence, case docket by April 17
A Dhaka tribunal today asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to produce by April 17 the evidence seized by the law enforcers in connection with a case filed over the murder of popular film actor Sohel Chowdhury in December 1998.
The tribunal also asked the Registrar General of the Supreme Court to produce the case docket of the same case by the that date.
Judge Md Zakir Hossain of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 of Dhaka passed the order after Assistant Public Prosecutor of the tribunal Sadia Afrin Shilpi submitted two separate petitions, seeking adjournment of the hearing.
In the applications, the prosecution said the officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station did not comply with the court order even though he was earlier asked to produce evidence (alamats) before it today (April 6).
On the other hand, the Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor informed that the case docket is now in the High Court. So, adjournment is needed, Afrin Shilpi added.
Among the accused, Tariq Sayeed Mamun, now in jail, was produced before the court during today's hearing while Adnan Siddiqui and Faruque Abbasi are now on bail.
The six others, including businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai and owner of Trumps Club Afakul Islam alias Bunty Islam, were shown "fugitives" in the case.
The rest four fugitives are Sanzidul Islam Imon, Ashish Roy Chowdhury, businessman Selim Khan and Harunur Rashid alias Leather Liton.
However, Rapid Action Battalion managed to arrest Ashish Roy on Tuesday (April 5) night.
On December 18, 1998, actor Sohel was shot dead by some miscreants at Trumps Club in Abedin Tower at the city's Banani Road-17.
Following the incident, the victim's brother filed a murder case at Gulshan Police Station.
After an investigation, detectives pressed charges against Aziz, Bunty and seven others on July 30, 1999.
On October 30, 2001, Dhaka's Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court framed charges against them.
Two years after framing charges against the accused, the case was transferred to Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 for its quick disposal.
Following a petition of an accused in the case, the High Court in 2003 stayed the proceedings of the trial.
On February 27, 2022, the stay on the trial proceedings was withdrawn after 19 years.
